Charlie Sheen Live Show Gets Panned by Critics & Fans

April 3, 2011 by Morgan le Fay

After Charlie Sheen‘s one man show was met with boos during its first performance Saturday night, perhaps the actor is learning to embrace a valuable life lesson: You can’t win them all.

Or, in his case, you can’t even win over most.

Fans and media outlets – many of whom weren’t among the 4,700 in attendance – took to the Web with an overwhelming disapproval of Sheen’s gig, which made its first stop at Detroit’s Fox Theatre. Audience members weren’t asking Sheen questions, as theshow’s description encouraged – they were asking for refunds.

“Sounds like Charlie Sheen was an epic fail tonight,” one userTweeted. “The gig’s up. Time to stop giving him attention and get him some help.”

Meanwhile, Real Detroit Weekly, a local entertainment newspaper, called Sheen, 45, the “most hated man in Detroit.”

Based on some reviews of the show, Charlie Sheen LIVE: My Violent Torpedo of Truth seemed to be living up to its title – at least the “torpedo” part. Entertainment Weekly said the show was a disaster, calling it the “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark of celebrity stage acts.”

“The show was a reminder that the pop culture phenomenon is serious about his beliefs,” a Detroit Free Press review read. “But most of the crowd wasn’t entertained by the loose and disorganized attempt.” And A.O. Scott, of theNew York Times, wrote that “the multimedia event had no clear structure or direction.”

Still a Fan Favorite?

With Sheen set to hit the stage in Chicago Sunday night, followed by 19 more shows across North America, is the tour a lost cause?

Maybe not, some fans say.

“Wow, totally blown away with Charlie’s performance,” one attendee wrote on the show’s Ticketmaster page. “The knowledge I gained from this show will stay with me for years to come! The enlightenment, the recipes, the anecdotes, the advice and most of all the TRUTH.”

Another audience member, who signed off “Warlock Apprentice,” raved about Sheen’s monologues. “After traveling to the future to see this show because I’m #winning, I can strongly recommend this #fastball explosion of creative awesome.”

And maybe the Warlock just needs a more receptive audience. One attendee in Detroit blamed fellow audience members for Sheen’s flop. “I personally thought the crowd turned on him too fast,” Travis Robinson, 21, tells PEOPLE. “Everyone ruined it for everyone else.”
